There are positives to be taken from this, and the worst thing that could come out of the piece would be if people were put off from claiming PIP.
I have been through an assessment, but it was for a DLA claim for my son; the claim was successful. My adult daughter has been through an assessment too, which was for PIP. The assessor and decision maker got part of her claim right and we got the rest on appeal, but she knew to expect this, because of the nature of her condition – they were never going to get it right first time.
And that is one of the things that struck us when watching the ITV piece, that the two people featured might have had a quite different experience if they had been helped with the claim, and with the appeal that sometimes follows.
Tribunal appeals are not inevitable; we could not go on if we knew that even the majority of the clients that we work with on claims and renewals were going to have to challenge the decision made by the Department. You need to know where they assessor and decision maker are coming from and we do not recommend that anyone goes through the process without professional help.
Are we the best at what we do? It is hard to say; we see a steady trickle of clients who have come from other firms and agencies. They are amazed at the difference between the way they were treated and how we work. We could not point to anyone else who we know to be better at helping people with PIP. When someone making an enquiry is unsure whether or not to instruct us, we often refer them to the client reviews on Google. The 60 or so 5 star ratings are very satisfying but you will learn more by reading what people have written about the service that we provide, they tell you about the experience that you can expect.
Should you have to get professional help simply to get what you are entitled to? No, certainly not, but we have to deal with the reality of the situation.
